The Value of Corporate Training

An athlete with a wide skill set is an asset to their team. Much in the same way, an employee with a wide skill set is an asset to their corporation. In both cases, these individuals can only continue to advance their talents by practicing and training to better themselves. Corporate training is the equivalent to running drills. Be sure your team can keep up.

For Employees

Though great candidates exist, the perfect candidate, the one with every skill desired and meets every specification needed; these candidates are very rare. Nevertheless, the great thing about all job applicants is that they can be taught.

Training, specifically for new employees, is an obvious need for companies. Education of incoming team members helps them to learn their exact role within the corporation. Learning ins and outs of the company makes for easier transitioning. In addition, once company dynamic is learned, new member have a better time improving their skills, which can help them have better success for the company.

Corporate training has a stigma of being an activity that new staff takes a part of but experienced personnel can benefit greatly from additional training. Many fields require constant refresher courses or updated methods to teach staff. Fields like IT, medical, and many other fields have constantly evolving practices that corporations need to be current with. In fact, it does a lot of good for corporations within these ever changing fields to offer frequent education for their employees, not only for personal growth but also for the growth of the company.

Studies have proven that quality of training is something very important to employees. According to research done by ClearCompany, 40% of employees will leave their position within the first year if they feel they received poor job training. This same research found that 68% of workers believe the most important policy in the workplace is training and development. Employee is a big deal to job seekers, and proper training not only teaches them but shows that the company cares about their future as well.

The best things that training can do is unite your team. This may sound difficult, given that employees can come and go anytime throughout the year. However right now is a great time to put this into practice. At the beginning of the year, many businesses are looking to revamp styles, make corrections for last year’s flaws, increase productivity, etc. Therefore, many places are in the process of introducing new methods to their staff. Learning together will help staff feel united on facing new issues. People feel more comfortable asking a question in a group if the topic is new to everyone.

What does this mean from a management standpoint? Obviously, corporate training applies to those who are going to be training as well. A teacher can’t teach if they haven’t been taught properly themselves. The biggest question from a management standpoint is what is the benefit from applying these teachings to your staff? More so, what is a good way to go about teaching?

So what is the benefit of corporate training? You may be thinking: “My veteran staff knows enough already. What more do they need to learn?” The cost of retraining employees is a number to keep in mind; but ask yourself this. What will it cost you if your employees aren’t trained well? How distracting is it to have an integrated function within a program your staff uses daily, yet none of them knows how to use it properly. Having an automatic counting and calculating software on all computers is pointless if your staff has no idea how to use it. It’s a loss in the end. So, what is the cost if you don’t train your employees? Too big to ignore.

Training doesn’t always have to come from within the company, though. Additional training for all is available in many forms: internal, external and even academic. Internal would be from within the company; helping show new sales techniques that the business wants to incorporate, retraining on the mission statement, and other revisions coming from someone within the company. External would bring in outside resources to train staff: having a teacher from a private learning center come and demonstrate how to use software updates, switching systems to increase productivity, increasing technical skills and much more. Academic is an option that varies depending on each company. Some like to offer tuition reimbursement to their employees, encouraging them to go back to school to better themselves for their positions. This may not be popular with all companies but many employees are grateful to have the opportunity to further their education without being catapulted into debt. Giving additional training to all employees is an investment and it comes back to help your company be successful.

Investing in training your employees can be valuable not only in their education but also in their dedication to the company. By dedicating time to training a wide skill set is an asset , it can reignite engagement. Companies who show they care about their staff have better commitment from employees to do a better job. Those who do not show any consideration for employees’ advancement make their staff feel uncared for and therefore they do not want to do their best to help the company succeed. The eternal question of ‘What’s in it for me?’ rings ever true in the ears of employees. If they feel their company doesn’t care, then why should they?

Going about training is a difficult thing to do. You can understand what needs to be taught but it can be difficult to convey that to others. Setting up procedures and ground rules for staff can help you get the message across more clearly. Procedures help employees know what is expected of them as far as business practice goes. By setting up ground rules, this creates a model for your team to follow to make meetings and training become easier. Establishing common rules can lead to a more respected environment that leads to a happier workplace.
