Introduction to Microsoft Azure Role-Based Certifications

This past September at their Ignite conference, Microsoft announced their new role-based certifications for Azure. This new model alters the Microsoft certification landscape dramatically by moving the focus from the product to the actual tasks that IT professionals perform. Microsoft sees the role-based certification model as a better way to keep pace with today’s business requirements and a better way to strengthen your IT career. Let’s talk about what’s new and what the new certifications look like.

Microsoft announced three new job roles that would align with three new certifications: Azure Administrator Associate, Azure Developer Associate, and Azure Solutions Architect. There will be others to follow, but those are the first three that have been announced. Microsoft also identified levels of expertise to further align the role-based certifications: Fundamental, Associate, and Expert. Here’s a graphic showing the relationship between the levels of expertise and where the certifications fit in.

Azure Role-Based Overview

The Azure Administrator Associate certification path is comprised of two certification exams:

  • AZ-100: Microsoft Azure Infrastructure and Deployment Exam

Retiring Azure Exams & Certifications

The following Azure related certification exams are going to be retired December 31, 2018. If you are studying for these exams, then you’ll want to switch gears toward the new exams or pass them by the end of the year.

  • 70-532: Developing Microsoft Azure Solutions
  • 70-533: Implementing Microsoft Azure Solutions
  • 70-535: Architecting Microsoft Azure Solutions

As a result of these exams being retired, the existing / old MCSA and MCSE certifications based on them are also being retired. As a result, the following larger Azure focused certifications are being retired on December 31, 2018 as well.

  • MCSE: Cloud Platform and Infrastructure
  • MCSA: Linux on Azure
  • MCSA: Cloud Platform

Transition Exams

Individuals who previously passed Exam 70-532, 70-533, or 70-535 should take the appropriate transition exam instead. The transition exam covers the delta between the current certification and what we expect people who earn the new certification to be able to do.

Transition exams will be available until June 30, 2019. For more information, and a free PDF download that includes this information, please reference our Azure Role-Based Certifications landing page.
