Get to Know the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP)

With the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in full force, many organization are looking to appoint and train Data Protection Officers (DPOs) to oversee data security strategy and GDPR compliance.

There are five pieces to remember about the GDPR: (1) Companies must be able to show compliance by May 25, 2018; (2) The GDPR will affect companies located in the European Union, as well as those that have operations and customers there; (3) The key principle of GDPR is giving consumers control of their data; (4) There are fines of up to 4% of total global turnover if rules in the GDPR are breached; and (5) The GDPR defines roles that are responsible for ensuring compliance: Data Controller, Data Processor, and Data Protection Officer (DPO).

What is the IAPP?

The International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) is a resource for professionals who want to develop and advance their careers by helping their organizations successfully manage risks and protect their data. Founded in 2000, the IAPP is a not-for-profit organization that helps define, support, and improve the privacy profession globally.

In addition to helping privacy professional prepare for the GDPR, IAPP certification training is for any professional who wants to know more about the issues and impacts of data privacy. Common departments of interest include: Risk Management, Database Administration, Network Operations, Security Operations, Human Resources, Sales, and Marketing.

What IAAP Certification Best Prepares Privacy Professionals for the GDPR?

Among the GDPR mandates is the requirement to appoint knowledgeable Data Protection Officers (DPOs) tasked with monitoring compliance, managing internal data protection activities, training data processing staff, conducting internal audits and more.

There’s no better way to prepare for the GDPR, or for the role of a Data Protection Officer (DPO), than by training for and attaining these two world-renowned, ANSI/ISO-accredited certifications:

  • Certified Information Privacy Professional/Europe (CIPP/E)
The Certified Information Privacy Professional/Europe (CIPP/E) delivers the comprehensive GDPR knowledge, perspective and understanding to ensure compliance and data protection success in Europe—equipping DPOs to take advantage of the career opportunity this sweeping legislation represents.

  • Certified Information Privacy Manager (CIPM)
The Certified Information Privacy Manager (CIPM) certification arms privacy and data protection professionals with everything they need to establish, maintain and manage an enterprise-wide privacy program across its entire lifecycle. CIPMs know privacy regulations, and they know how to make them work for their organizations.

Note: New Horizons offers a combination course that will prepare you for both the CIPP/E & CIPM certification.
