Effective Communication in a Tech Based World
Communicating has never been easier in this day and age. Between texting, instant messaging, email and even video calling, people can get in touch with each other better now than ever before. The world has come a long way from holding conversations via pony express. However, the advancement in communication has also brought some interesting languages with it. Linguistics like text lingo and emojis have made for even faster communication. Faster; but not entirely better. In a world all about instantaneous conversation, the old school way of effectively communicating is being left in the dust.
You can talk until someone’s ears fall off. But it is a lot harder to be sure the person you are talking to is really hearing and understanding what is being said. Retaining the information relayed to a person is a lot harder if the communication isn’t effectively given. One of the places where effective communication is needed is in the office, but it is often not always found there.
The act of communication itself is not the issue that many offices face. In fact, communicating has become a lot easier especially based off the tools listed above: texting, instant messaging and video calls, to name a few. The introduction of these tools into the workplace has even made older methods of communication obsolete. People needed to travel for business is not as mandatory now because of video conferences. Employees can work from home more easily due to many of these resources.
The issue comes into play when trying to effectively communicate. At work and in places of business this is especially necessary. A problem that electronic contact creates is lack of voice. Tone, infliction and word choice can help others truly grasp what is trying to be said. Messages can be misinterpreted when those are taken away.
Another crucial point to communicating effectively is clarity. These days, a lot of people have a hard time getting to the point. Keeping things clear, direct and simple is one of the easiest (but not only) ways to effectively communicate. Keep information only as long as it needs to be. Expanding too much on every detail shifts the focus of the conversation all over the place, making the person responsible for doing the task to focus more on something unimportant instead of the task at hand. This causes confusion and setbacks.
Professional Development Training is Always an Option
It's important for organizations to recognize the vital role strong communication skills can have on a team and should encourage professional development throughout the organization. Below are some of the most popular one-day courses that New Horizons offers in this area:
- Communication Strategies
For the better part of every day, we are communicating to and with others. Whether it’s the speech you deliver in the boardroom, the level of attention you give your spouse when they are talking to you, or the look you give the cat, it all means something. This workshop will help participants understand the different methods of communication and how to make the most of each of them.
- Interpersonal Skills
We’ve all met that dynamic, charismatic person that just has a way with others, and has a way of being remembered. This workshop will help participants work towards being that unforgettable person by providing communication skills, negotiation techniques, tips on making an impact, and advice on networking and starting conversations.
- Email Etiquette
In this course, students will learn about e-mail policies and learn how to write professional e-mail memos that convey appropriate messages.
- Presentation Skills
This program can benefit anyone who presents; a trainer, a meeting facilitator, speaker, or seminar discussion leader. No matter which role you are assuming, this workshop will help you become more efficient and proficient with the skills of providing information to others.
More often than not, issues in the work place arise because of miscommunication. Without effective communication, instructions can be passed along similarly to a game of telephone. Furthermore, lack of focus can cause blame shifting. Then it can never be clear where the issue stemmed from and it’s harder to teach the proper way to accomplish task.
