7 Skill Areas Required for a Digital Transformation

7 Skill Areas Required for a Digital Transformation

Digital Transformation (DX) is the application of digital technologies to improve the performance or reach of a business, and it will continue to be an important topic for companies across the globe. Executives in all industries are using digital advances, such as data analytics, mobility, social media, and smart embedded devices (IoT) to change customer relationships, internal processes, and value propositions.

Although there are arguably many more, below are top 7 skill areas that we believe are required for a business to fully leverage and embrace Digital Transformation:

1. Big Data Analytics

Big data allows companies to make meaningful, strategic adjustments that minimize costs and maximize results. If you know what consumers and employees are doing currently, you can create projections for what they will do in the future, and start implementing changes to address their needs and your goals. A digital transformation isn’t complete unless a business adopts big data.

2. Machine Learning

Machine learning is an application of artificial intelligence (AI) that provides systems the ability to automatically learn and improve from experience without being explicitly programmed. Machine learning focuses on the development of computer programs that can access data and use it learn for themselves. According to a survey from Tech Pro Research, just 28% of companies have some experience with AI or machine learning, and more than 40% said their enterprise IT personnel don’t have the skills required to implement and support AI and/or machine learning.

3. Change Management

Social media, mobile devices, big data, and cloud computing are reshaping the industrial landscape of communication and collaboration. Digital Transformation is a new dimension of change management as organizations strive to understand, assimilate, and deliver new digital strategies.

4. Cloud Computing

Cloud computing and Digital Transformation go hand-in-hand. Cloud services, which effectively offer unlimited and dynamic IT resources, form the foundation of Digital Transformation and can facilitate rapid business change. But it is also clear to more organizations that Digital Transformation strategies serve to directly enhance the effectiveness and benefits of Cloud implementations.

5. Digital Security

As businesses embark on their journey to Digital Transformation, they must make cybersecurity a top priority. Organizations need to maintain confidentiality, integrity, and availability of data in all these contexts: on premises, in the cloud, and in hybrid environments. Both the value and the volume of data have never been higher, and end points are more vulnerable than ever.

6. Leadership & Development

“While the use of established and leading-edge technologies is, of course, paramount to DX-related endeavors, soft skills — interpersonal communication, change management, strategic thinking, influence, and others — are the unsung heroes of successful DX implementations,” says Eric Bloom, adjunct analyst with IDC's IT Executive Programs (IEP).

7. Mobility Management

Mobility is an essential enabler of Digital Transformation. However, when it comes to enterprise mobility management (EMM), there is a lack of strategic planning among many businesses. Organizations are focused on the broader digital revolution for improved efficiencies, revenues, and profits, but few are prioritizing mobility management in their plans.

Some Closing Thoughts

Digital transformation can and in some cases has fundamentally changed how businesses operate and how they deliver value to customers. There are a number of reasons that a business may undergo digital transformation, but by far, the most likely reason is that they have to in order to survive.

Recent studies back this up time and time again: The IDC report “FutureScape: Worldwide CIO Agenda 2016 Predictions” emphasized that, "One-third of the top 20 firms in industry segments will be disrupted by new competitors within five years," and that it's a matter of "transform or perish."
